BitPay launched Lite accounts today - a simplified sign-up path for ad-hoc card use. A Lite account creates a single virtual card with one-click funding, designed for users who need a card for a specific vendor or trial and do not want to set up a full multi-card account.
Lite accounts work for specific scenarios: a user trying BitPay for the first time, a user who needs a card for one vendor purchase, a user evaluating whether the platform fits their workflow. After funding, the user has a single active card; once they issue a second card or want persistent history, the Lite account can be upgraded to a full account without re-registering.
The Lite account shares all the security infrastructure of full accounts: no KYC, 3-D Secure threshold protection, instant freeze, merchant locks, per-card limits. The simplification is in account management, not in security. Lite users get the same protection as multi-card operators.
Lite account operators can upgrade at any time from the cabinet. The upgrade preserves all existing cards, balance, and history - the only change is that multi-card management, workstream tagging, and API access become available. There is no charge or commitment required to upgrade.
